17 something,
living in The Netherlands.
just here to get some shit of my mind,
nevermind me.
We are going to be the death of ourselves one of these days. We almost were back in the early 80’s too, apparently nuclear war was averted thanks to one Soviet officer’s hunch that reflections off clouds in Montana were just clouds and not missile trails streaking towards the USSR. Thank god for him, we need more people like that around.
Why? Controversy sells. Just yesterday I posted a long rant about various aspects of the Mac vs. PC “battle” that pisses me off, and I get a sudden jump in hits to the site. Not just to that post, to the whole site. What are the odds of that? Pretty damned good, considering how much people like to indulge in drama while in their online personalities. “WAHH UR JUS DOIN IT FER TEH DRAMA” - wrong. Those things actually piss me off, but what baffles me greatly is how one can simply post what pisses them off and get thousands more hits than they would have received if they had posted a list of things they love. I know, because I’ve done both here. Weird, right? Not really. Think about it, how many TV shows, movies, songs, or any other form of art have taken advantage of the basic human instinct to love gossip? I can recall one movie where a psychopath was killing people according to how many people tuned into his webcam broadcast of the murder. Can’t remember the name of the movie, because it was just another boring crime-suspense-drama flick that was barely worthy of a rent at best, but the premise was pretty freaky.
Why is this bad? What good could possibly come out of our generation’s desire to watch and participate in drama and controversy? Are these sorts of people going to make good world leaders? Hell no! Are they going to make good anything other than political pundits or pathetic “celebrity bloggers” like the always moronic Perez Hilton? Hell no! Sure, the world (and by extension the internet) doesn’t revolve around being nice all the time. That’s a given, but this isn’t about being nice or courteous at all. It’s about minimizing the amount of controversy that we’re all bombarded with on a daily basis. Will that ever happen? Hell no!
